Part 1: On The Road To Boston

How to summarize an experience that you never thought you'd ever partake in over the course of a few short blog posts is mind boggling to me, but here we go...

Let's start at the beginning, shall we?

Right before we left for Disney World for the Princess Half Marathon Weekend, an offer was presented before my by my employer. A local company, Citgo, was the fuel and gas sponsor for the Boston Marathon in 2022 and planned to bring a team of healthcare providers, first responders, and teachers to join their associates along with them to run the Boston Marathon. So, I received the application, quickly googled to make sure I would finish the race in a timely manner, and hit submit. We went to Disney World and I waited...and waited...and didn't hear anything. With only six weeks until Boston, I assumed I didn't get in, and I was ok with it. (A little disappointed, but still ok with it.)

Much to my surprise, I received an email the following week, welcoming me to Team Citgo to run the Boston Marathon!! My heart wanted to explode and I might have screamed out loud right there in the hallway of our department! (Sorry, coworkers!)

Now, with only 5 weeks until the big day, I knew I had to get my training amped up! I'd already run three half marathons since December, so I had up to that distance under my belt. Ultimately, I decided to add a 16 miler and a 20 miler to my list and a few longer runs in between.

My training plan each week was to keep at least two shorter runs on weekdays and one longer run on weekends. This worked incredibly well until my 20 miler. I didn't feel it at the time of running, but after the soreness wore off, my right hip began to bother me. It wasn't an intense pain, but I definitely knew it was there. So, I iced, heated, ibuprofen'd, biofreezed, and did everything I could to help it chill out. With only 2 weeks to go until race day, I knew I should probably not run on it any longer, so I did only one very easy 2 miler in the week leading up to Boston. With that, I hoped my efforts would be enough!

I am so very thankful that Citgo chose me for this incredible opportunity! It is truly one I will never forget!

Stay tuned for more from our travel day, time at the Expo, sightseeing around Boston, and the race itself!

I'm still in serious disbelief...I just ran Boston, y'all!!

With all of the craziness of the holiday season, I somehow missed posting last week's Dopey Training recap because well...hello, sleep. Exhaustion took over and I had a lot going on at one time, hence the lack of posting. Anyway, here's two weeks of recaps looped into one!

Over the past two weeks, I officially hit my highest training point in this Dopey Challenge training plan. No, I haven't followed it to a tee and I didn't plan to when I first started out - I kind of formed and shaped it to work with my body and physical limitations...and I'm seriously thinking this will be my final full marathon. My IT Band just can't handle it.

Anyway, the treadmill and half marathon combo did the trick and before I knew it, a 20 miler was under my training belt! :)

After Saturday, I gave my legs a little bit of time to recuperate from my run and I felt great by the time I picked up running again.

Throughout the past two weeks, I've also run several 3 and 4 mile training runs as well as a small back-to-back this past Friday and Saturday.

Fitness Friday Dopey Training

On Friday's run, my outfit consisted of a red Christmas themed shirt and Christmas tights. I'm sure the neighbors thought it a bit crazy but oh well...who cares!

Also, I started to break in another pair of Mizuno's this past week since I plan to travel to Marathon Weekend with two pair (just in case). I LOVE new running shoes and the way they feel!

Fitness Friday Dopey Training

Saturday's run consisted of a 5K followed by a quick 2 miler around town. Brayden also enjoyed chasing the birds after our run and I'm sure I tacked on an extra mile chasing after him!

I also managed to squeeze in a 4 miler before dark on Monday of this week before the rain hit. Yesterday's afternoon 3 miler was the second run of the week and will be combined with a long-ish run on Saturday for the culmination of the week. I can't believe that there's just two weekends to go until we are in Disney World! Time sure has flown by!

The first day of winter came and went in the south which left yesterday's run complete with...shorts and a short sleeved shirt. Yes. Gotta love these southern winters. I hear there's going to be a freeze on Christmas day. The weather never can make up its mind in the winter - it's always one extreme to another.

Happy Christmas weekend! I hope you all have an amazing time with your family and friends, soaking up all of the wonders this season has to bring!

Merry Christmas!

Dopey Challenge Training Week 22

My training this week was INCREDIBLY lackluster. The weather turned yucky which then turned icy and crazy enough, turned to SNOW this morning! I even busted out a treadmill run this week, which means I'm pretty desperate and have zero motivation. I missed one of my planned training runs this week but added a bit of extra cross training instead. When my only option is the treadmill, I seriously have to drag myself onto it and convince myself it's a good idea. Bad, I know...

Wednesday - Rest Day
Thursday - Squats/Lunges/PT with cross training

On Saturday morning, I ran an 8 mile training run and it was a gorgeous day! The weather was perfect!!

After the run, my friends and I traveled to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to visit a plantation home! We had a great girls day and I enjoyed hanging with them! :)

It's been a busy week along with the crazy weather, so I decided on Tuesday that if I didn't jump on the treadmill, I probably wouldn't get to run at all. So, a treadmill run it was! Honestly, it wasn't terrible, I would just much rather run outside. It has to be pretty crazy conditions to make me choose a treadmill over outside!

This morning, I received a 5 a.m. text message from one of my friends telling me to go outside because it was snowing. Y'all. SNOW...in Southwest Louisiana. This is unheard of. It's maybe only legit snowed here like twice in my lifetime and definitive not like this! It was coming down hard!!

I couldn't believe it!

Yes, we get excited about snow! Schools were also canceled for a super rare "Snow Day"!

I just HAD to build a creepy little snowman! Once in a lifetime, right?!

SNOW!

The frozen conditions here are going to make tomorrow incredibly interesting. So, I'm scheduled to run my 20 mile training run for Dopey Challenge tomorrow. My plan is to run 7 early am miles followed by a half marathon around town.  Crossing my fingers I don't finish like a popsicle!

Ok, now I'm off to wake Brayden up so he can play in it too! Who knows when we will see this again!

Have a fabulous Friday!

17 Mile Long Run

This past weekend, I ran my longest run in this marathon training cycle - a 17 miler!

On Friday night, the little band of runners that remain from my old running group posted on facebook about their morning running plans. A few of us who had longer mileage connected and I was invited to join them on Saturday morning! You have no idea how happy their invitation made me (for several reasons) - #1 My run was going to have to start at 5:30 a.m. due to a crazy Saturday schedule, not to mention it's still super dark outside #2 Dark = dangerous #3 Seventeen miles is a long time to run alone.

When my alarm went off on Saturday morning, I was actually excited about my run!

17 Mile Run Dopey Training

We were also informed by the weather man that the highs would be in the 80's on Saturday and the lows would be in the 40's by Saturday night (a cold front was making its way in).  Despite the heat and humidity during the run, a breeze was blowing all morning which actually felt kind of nice!

Our run began around 5:45 a.m. and we kept it at a nice and easy pace, which I liked (and so did my knee)!

17 Mile Run Dopey Training

As we talked, the miles ticked on by and before we knew it, we had hit mile 6 and the sun was beginning to rise!

17 Mile Run Dopey Training

Although I don't like the mosquitos and random wildlife that I've seen down River Road, I do enjoy the sunrises!

Our first loop was right at 10 miles which meant I had 7 left to run. We stopped back at our cars at the end of the first loop to hydrate, take a gel, and potty. It was at this point that I realized I was running out of time and if I didn't go, I would be late for Brayden's Christmas pictures. So, I said goodbye to my running group friends and set out solo for the remainder of the run.

17 Mile Run Dopey Training

As I was running, I realized how much I missed having company during these long runs. Having a buddy helps the miles go by so much faster!

17 Mile Run Dopey Training

Throughout the run, the temps rose higher and higher. I was really a nasty mess by the end of it all. Thankfully, I finished in just enough time to hop in my car and head back home to pick up Brayden for his pictures!

17 Mile Run Dopey Training

I'm so glad to say that my knee didn't give me much trouble during this run and neither did my hamstring. I was seriously so worried about both!

17 Mile Run Dopey Training

Although it was a slower pace from my norm, I really enjoyed the run and so did my body. I think I'm just going to have to learn to take it slower on my long runs from here on out if I want to make it across the finish line of Dopey in one piece!

I'll have one 20 miler left as far as super long runs go and then I'll be done! I can't believe the time has already passed by so fast! Seven weeks and counting until Dopey and Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend! Can't wait!

Dopey Challenge Training Week 20!

Week 20!! How and when did that happen? We are SO close to January, it's kind of scary. This week went well as far as training goes and I'm excited for this weekend - I have two really long runs left and Saturday's will be one of those!

10 mile run
Monday - Rest Day
Tuesday - 4 miles
Wednesday - Squats/Lunges/PT with cross training
Thursday - 3 miles
Friday - Squats/Lunges/PT with cross training

This week, I've been incredibly diligent with my squats/lunges as I want Saturday's run to go as smooth as possible. The weather forecast is calling for temps in the 80's on Saturday and the 40's on Sunday. There's no possible way for me to switch my long run day to Sunday, so I'm just going to roll with it.

On Sunday morning, I woke up early for my 10 mile long run. It was warmer than I thought and I honestly should have gone back inside to change my outfit but oh well. I've been doing this a while, but it's almost as if my brain forgets how to dress when the weather starts to change. So crazy.

I made it through the first 8 miles alone, then stopped by the house on the way back to pick up Brayden for the final 2 miles. Jason is in our church orchestra and has to be there by 9 a.m. for rehearsal, so I usually hang back around home until we leave for church around 10 a.m.

After I began my run with Brayden, my watch started beeping at me because it was about to shut off due to low battery. I snapped a quick picture of it before that happened...

In total, the run ended at 10 miles. I've adapted a run/walk on my longer runs where I walk for 2 minutes after my watch beeps that I've reached each mile. It's worked out really well so far!

Somehow, this week has been so crazy that I missed out on taking pictures from my other week day runs....oh well.

I'll leave you with something fun my class did on Wednesday night at church!

I asked our entire department of kids (4 years old - high school) to donate items for Operation Christmas Child and they showed up big time! This is the second year our church has participated in this project and our department put together five boxes! Operation Christmas Child collects "shoe boxes" full of goodies and distributes them to kids less fortunate throughout the world. It's such a neat organization!

Those boxes were STUFFED! After our boxes were made, we prayed that they would be a blessing to the lives they touch this holiday season. I can't think of a better way to start off our Thanksgiving week.

We have so many fun holiday things planned this weekend, I'm looking forward to sharing them with you!! Have a fabulous weekend!

Dopey Challenge Training Week 19

This week and past weekend were less than stellar for Dopey Training. To this point, I'd done SO well at keeping with three consistent runs per week plus my physical therapy routine. Sadly, I developed some kind of crazy respiratory sickness over the past month and it reared its ugly head last week. I decided that in order to fully kick it in the tail, I needed to rest over the weekend and not go for a long run. Instead, I tweaked my Dopey Training plan for the next few weeks in order to fit a 17 mile long run and a 20 mile long run into the mix. Unfortunately, time is not on our hands at the moment when it comes to training.

Thankfully on Monday of this week, I was ready to go again and while a few effects of the respiratory stuff is still lingering, it's not near what it was!

Wednesday - Rest Day

After a weekend of zero running, I was definitely ready to get back at it on Monday afternoon! It was warm out and slightly humid, but we still had a good run!

It felt great to be back at it!

Something that struck me as funny really shouldn't have....when the tires on the Bob are properly inflated, they ride SO much smoother. This was totally my "duh" moment of the week!

On  Thursday, Jason joined us for a quick 2 miles before dinner - my how quickly the weather changes! We were in the 80's and enjoying the pool on Tuesday night and in the 50's and wearing hoodies and sweaters on Wednesday night! CRAZY!

A few other fun things happened this week -

Brayden learned the "big boy" slide! We debated on getting him one of those little tykes plastic playhouses with a slide for Christmas but now I don't think we will since he loves this one so much (and it's already in our backyard)! Back to the drawing board on that one...

At work, we have a points system where associates accrue points for various things - like a 5/10/15 year milestone, associate of the month, birthdays, congrats, etc. Well, I have been hoarding my points for years and finally put them to use yesterday! I ordered a Michael Kors purse and wallet I'd been eyeing for a while! Can't wait for it to arrive!

Today and tomorrow, I have an American Cancer Society conference out of town that I'm really looking forward to attending. Also, my long run will be pushed to Sunday morning of this weekend instead of tomorrow.

Here's to a great one! Happy Friday!!

Dopey Challenge Training Week 18

How is it already Friday again?! I honestly can't believe how fast this year is going by! Each passing day draws us closer and closer to Dopey Challenge and I cannot wait!

How did this week go? Let's take a look and see!

This week has been a good but busy one! Along with work, life's daily duties were busy as well. We had dinner with Jason's dad one night followed by dinner with my parents the next. Add in a trip to the pumpkin patch as well as a couple of World Series games and well, there you have my week! A cold front also came through this week which felt incredible and I loved every minute! It's supposed to rain again today to cool off for the weekend! Here's hoping!

Saturday's run was the longest one of this training cycle yet! I ran 14 miles and shared my experiences on Monday.

One of the best parts of recovering from that training run was a soak with this amazing bath bomb! I definitely need more of these!

On Monday after work, Jason, Brayden, and I completed three miles. I didn't have a chance to take any pictures as we were pressed for time a bit.

Thursday after work, Brayden and I went out for a four mile run. It was a great one with awesome weather! I'm seriously loving it!

Friday will be a rest day since I'm planning on running a 10K on Saturday. I'd planned on running 6 miles anyway and this 10K is one of the only ones in my home town, so why not?! I'm not attempting to PR or go crazy - I just want to run it and have fun!

As I mentioned, we also visited the pumpkin patch this week, so I have to leave you with one of my favorite pictures from our trip!

He LOVED playing at the pumpkin patch - we will have to visit again soon (maybe even today if it's not raining)!

Last but not least, I'm SO excited for the Astros who are holding their own in the World Series! Wednesday night's game was amazing and I can't wait to see more! I've been sporting Astros gear to work all week! :)

Go 'stros!

Have a fabulous weekend!!

5 Marathon Training Truths (I Forgot About)...

So, most of you know it's been 4 years since I trained for and completed a full marathon. I've run 5 full marathons so far, so I felt like I kinda knew what I was doing when going into this training cycle (although I'm not going to lie - I definitely felt rusty)! Well, as I was out for my long run this past Saturday, I realized that there were SEVERAL things I somehow forgot about while training for a full.

#1 The amount of GU/Chomps I go through in a training cycle

I mean, really...who thinks about these things? I hardly use these guys while half marathon training but during my long runs lately, I've been eating them up! Guess I should have bought them in bulk over the summer as I've already made two trips to Academy this fall!

#2 How much a long run truly is a mental game

On Saturday, I realized how true this statement really is. It's crazy how we train our minds as runners to distract ourselves from whatever mileage we are running at the time. I realized at one point on Saturday that I had completely distracted myself from what I was doing! It reminded me of a quote I'd read recently that said something along the lines of how a long run doesn't really start until the runner forgets they are running! All. Mental.

#3 Sore. Muscles.

This one explains itself - along with aching joints, etc. My foam roller and heating pad have become my BFF's here lately!

#4 Confidence Boost

When training for a full marathon, a few longer runs are a necessity and boy are they a confidence boost! I feel like once you pass that half marathon threshold (13+ miles) in training, everything starts to click into place and come together. It sure gives a boost of confidence on race day, too!

#5 Satisfaction knowing I just ran a REALLY long way

Ya know, there's just something about that feeling once a really long training run is over - your muscles ache, you have to limp a little to walk, and those endorphins are off the hook! Yes, I just ran 20 miles because I wanted to and yes, I might be a little bit crazy...but who cares! I feel amazing!

What are some things you learned while training for a race you'll never forget?

14 Mile Training Run

There's a million things that go through a runners mind while marathon training - can I do it, will I be able to stand the training, 26 miles...holy cow, early Saturday mornings, eating right, taking proper care of our bodies, the list goes on and on.

When it came to my Dopey training cycle and how far I've come so far, I'm not gonna lie - I was worried. To this point, I'd only run a 12 mile training run as my highest mileage and that would get me to a half but a half AND a full? Yikes. Don't get me wrong, I know I still have plenty of time to train, but I'm not one to sit back and watch time pass by - I like to have a plan and stick to it. Another kink in my plans was our vacation. Our September cruise date was pushed into October which kinda threw my training schedule off a little bit.

So when we returned home from vacation, I knew that this past Saturday was my day for 14 miles. Although I felt as if I was coming down with something on Friday (chills, sore throat, stopped up sinuses), I did all I could to fight it off - drank lots of water, took a short nap on Friday afternoon after work, soaked in a soothing bath, and went to sleep early on Friday night.

Thankfully, it somewhat worked and I felt much better on Saturday morning!

I started my run a bit later than planned because I had to make an emergency stop into WalMart on my way into town. I thought my KT Tape container was full when I got in my car, but I quickly realized that I only had 2 strips of tape instead of 3. Ouch. I didn't want to chance anything going crazy, so I stopped for a quick detour for KT Tape. Sad times for me - there was no KT Pro Tape available so I had to buy the regular tape. Although I knew it wouldn't stick well, I purchased it anyway as I figured some was better than none.

14 Mile Long Run

Once back on the road, I began thinking out my plan for the morning and I really really really started to miss my running group. I never had to think through ALL of these aspects before (like water, powerade, potty stops, different routes to change things up, having people out there so I'm not completely alone in the dark, etc)...and I don't like it one bit. Thankfully, a buddy from my old running group had a water cooler set up where I could take a 4 mile loop once, then return back to my car, and complete two five mile loops with a stop at my car between each. As you know, I HATE running with water bottles or water belts, so I try to find spots with water fountains throughout town. Each return to my car holds gatorade and a GU.

14 Mile Long Run

Lots of wildlife were out and about on Saturday morning including squirrels and several bunnies! The bunnies were too fast for me to snap a picture, though.

14 Mile Long Run

As I returned to my car after the four mile loop, I realized that Saturday morning was the morning of a GIANT breast cancer walk in my town. The founder of the breast cancer walk passed away from pancreatic cancer this year, so I knew it would be even bigger than before. The last time I walked this one with my dad (several years back), I remember the crowds of people that completely filled the downtown streets from one side to the other as far as you could see. It's super amazing and incredibly encouraging, but I did not want to be in their way. Instead, I ran a piece of the 5 mile loop twice (coincidentally, it's a part of the 5 mile loop I can't stand) which gave a bit of extra time for the walk to pass through. I was definitely happy to have that giant loop out of the way.

14 Mile Long Run

The plan worked out perfectly and although I did encounter part of the walk, it was mostly the end of the walk and I was not in the way at all!

14 Mile Long Run

At this point, I had 3 miles left in my run and as I passed the park, I noticed a few familiar people - it was one of my best friends, her husband, and her little girl! I am so glad I had the opportunity to stop and talk to her for a few minutes!

14 Mile Long Run

After splitting from her, I finished the final 3 miles and called it a day. Despite my wonky piece of KT Tape, neither my IT Band or my hamstring bothered me at all, ever (YAY)!

It amazes me how we as runners are able to disconnect from everything going on around us and simply run. You know how sometimes a three mile afternoon run seems to last FOREVER but flies by during a long run? That is incredibly crazy to me and just goes to show that running truly is a mental sport. It's all in your mindset!

14 Mile Long Run

Lots of podcasts were listened to during this run which kept me company along the way. By the end of it, I was DRENCHED! It was warm and humid outside and simply...yucky.

14 Mile Long Run

Just because it's my luck...the weather decided to turn cool on Sunday. The day after my long run. Of course.

14 Mile Long Run

During the run, I decided to walk 2 minutes after reaching each mile. That really seemed to help so I think I'm going to adapt that mindset during long runs from here on out. I was definitely able to run longer and didn't feel as if I was going to pass out during the last mile. Although these long runs are hard, I do feel as if I'm getting stronger each time. I felt SO much better during mile 12 of this run than I did during mile 12 of my last long run! Progress, people!

After this weekend, I now have three really long runs left - a 16 mile, an 18 mile, and a 20 mile. I am going to borrow an idea from Kathryn and run an extra 7 miles the morning of a local half marathon for my 20 mile day. Now to add in a 16 and an 18 mile run and I'll be good to go!

As an end to a great day, the Astros also clenched the ALCS for a trip to the WORLD SERIES! OMG. Needless to say, I was slightly freaking out!

The. Astros. Are. In. The. World. Series. Y'all...I can't believe it!

How is your marathon training going so far? Feeling confident? Scared? Nervous?
(Yes to all of the above is how I currently feel!)
