This past weekend, I ran my first post-baby half marathon! After doing a few calculations, I figured out that my last half marathon was 14 months ago - it took place when I was 16 weeks pregnant and Brayden is now 8 months old.
I honestly forgot how challenging a half marathon could be. After running 25+ halfs over the past six years, I felt like I had this one in the bag. Boy was I wrong!
Let me start at the beginning....
This half marathon was located in Lafayette, LA - about an hour away from home. My running buddy Heather and I decided that we would drive up the night before and spend the night.
We arrived at packed pickup around 4 p.m., then spent the rest of our afternoon shopping around town!
Dinner was at Zea's, one of my favorite restaurants. Heather had never been, so it was fun to introduce her to one of my favorites!
We started off with spinach dip which was delicious!
For dinner, I had the duck, corn grits, and butternut squash. All delicious as well!
After dinner, we checked into our hotel and I set up my race outfit for the next day.
As soon as possible, I was in bed and ready to go to sleep! This was my first night (ever) away from Brayden and I wanted to catch as many zzzz's as possible. (By the way, his crazy little month long sleep regression thing has passed and he's back to sleeping through the night, thank GOODNESS!)
By race morning, we knew we were in trouble. The temps were below freezing with a "feels like 26 degrees" forecast. Y'all. I am not used to that. Like at all. "Feels like 26" might as well have been below zero to us.
We bundled up anyway (thankfully we were prepared), then headed to a local school to catch a bus to the start line.
As soon as we hopped off the bus, we were in search of a warm place to hide. That's when I heard my name - it was Lisa Green of the Disney Exchange podcast! I was SO excited to see her again!! We only talked for a few minutes, but she pointed the way to the warm spot...
...inside the registration tent, they had these amazing heat lamps!
Heather and I stayed inside as long as possible and checked out the race map.
Thankfully, I knew someone would be in front of me the entire time so I wouldn't have to decipher this myself!
With about 5 minutes till race time, we were instructed to make our way to the start.
I bumped into Lisa again and we took this really chilly "we're freezing" picture!
Before we knew it, we were walking toward the start line, then we heard "GO"!
...and we were off!
Most of this race was throughout the country and farmland. I now get the double name of the race...the Lafayette area is know as "Cajun Country" anyway, but we were literally running through the country. Well played, guys.
My feet felt like blocks of ice until almost mile 2. That's one of the worst feelings to me. Thankfully, Heather remembered hand warmers which helped my hands not feel the same as my feet!
Yep, this was our view for 90% of the race!
We hit mile five and were feeling great. We decided to do a thing where we would walk for a minute each time we passed a mile marker sign. It was working well for us until about mile 8 or 9, and that's where the race became difficult. You know that expression "hit the wall"? I'm pretty sure it's never happened to me in a half marathon, but it did on Saturday.
Again, we were still frozen and the wind was now blowing directly at us. My entire body felt fatigued, especially my legs and I felt as if I couldn't go on any longer. Heather said she felt the same way. I finished off my pack of GU chomps which seemed to help in the energy department and somehow, we made it to mile 12.
Of course I had to stop for my usual mile 12 picture!
After mile 12, I kept saying "just 1 mile to go....just .8 to go...just .5 to go..." and I had to remind myself that I ran this far, I could run until the end.
Thankfully, we were pre-warned about the "rolling hill" right before the finish line...however, this race had more hills than just the finish line, especially for someone who runs on nothing but flat terrain back at home. (We literally have NO hills!)
My IT Band also decided to wait until around 12 and a half miles before giving me a fit. I was grateful it waited that long!
We crossed the finish line at an official time of 2:26 minutes...not my best, not my worst. I am currently at the point right now where I'm wondering how in the world I was in such good shape in early 2015 to run a sub-2-hour half marathon. It's CRAZY how much a baby changes your entire body and mindset! Weight wise, I weigh less than I did when I became pregnant with Brayden however, my body was in better racing shape. If I don't ever get back to that former self, then I honestly don't care. It might become a goal in the future and it might not. Right now, I am just focusing on staying active and spending as much time with my little guy as possible! I can't ever get this time with him back and it's going by so fast...I just want to hold onto it and slow down time, but that's not possible.
After chatting with Lisa a bit more at the post-race party, we decided it was time to thaw out and head back to the hotel. You know it's bad when you stay frozen the entire race. We still aren't sure why we made the decision to throw our jackets away mid-way through the course! Lesson learned!
After returning to our room, we cranked up the heater, took showers, ate a few bites, and got ready for the day. The hotel even offered us a late checkout, which we were so grateful for!
You see that huge muffin? I purchased it at Whole Foods the night before the race! I was only able to eat half of it after the race, so I saved the rest for Sunday morning!
We decided to keep our tradition alive and have breakfast at "Another" Broken Egg (even though we were in a different town)!
The food and coffee was delicious as always and we really enjoyed our post-race meal!
On Sunday, I wasn't as sore as I expected although my calves did bother me a bit. I have my next half marathon coming up this weekend, so I'm going to focus on shorter runs, my legs, and my IT Band this week so I (hopefully) won't have any issues during the race.
Thanks for following along with my journey! Hope you have a great week! :)

Fitness Friday - When, Where, and How?
Confession time: I did not run or workout not one single time this week. Not one. Well, unless you count the one mile walk I took with Brayden last night...
What's going on? Well, as most of you know I returned to work this week from maternity leave. I can honestly say that work itself hasn't been bad at all! I didn't even cry like I warned Jason I would!
My job and career is something I'm passionate about and really enjoy, so leaving Brayden for several hours each day with my mom isn't bad at all. Brayden and I still manage to enjoy our afternoon times together and our evening snuggles on the couch. I do miss him throughout the day, but I enjoy returning home to him so much more!
Now, here's where the tricky part comes into play - working out. When, where, and mostly...how? With this new and ever changing schedule of ours, that's something I'm just going to have to figure out. In the meantime, I've set a goal to at least obtain 10,000 steps per day on my fitbit. Although my job is an active one, it doesn't warrant that many steps per day alone so this will take a little effort on my part. I know it's an obtainable goal for now and I'm happy with it!
I do have plans to run this Saturday with my friend Heather and I'm excited about it. I can't wait to run again!
Speaking of Saturday running, last Saturday was an interesting one! Heather and I text back and forth on Friday night to determine our plan of attack. You see, the weather forecast called for 70-100% rain from 5 a.m. until the afternoon on Saturday. I'm not afraid of a little rain, but this one was calling for flash flood warnings and all that craziness!
We decided to play it by ear and re-evaluate in the morning.
On Saturday morning, I woke up to a fog and humidity laden running route but I didn't care - it wasn't raining or lightning, so after a little discussion, we decided to get our run going!
Dreary morning!
We took a before picture because I didn't know if we would even be able to take an after picture!
Our run went well and although the humidity was high, we pushed through. In the end we decided to tack on an extra mile for a total of 6! My furthest distance to run postpartum thus far! Yay!
We managed to make it through the entire run without any rain...but boy was it on the way!
After my run, I heard Madalynn barking like crazy at something from her perch at the front window. I assumed it was the neighbors cat but I was wrong! One of our turtle friends from the end of the road had made its way to my flower bed and was laying eggs! We didn't disturb her (I know the above picture looks like we were close to her but we weren't). She was able to finish her business and leave before the storm hit!
Once the rain came, it came with a vengeance...fast and furious, lightning and all! I was grateful we didn't have to run through that! This picture was taken only about 5 minutes after it started to rain!
I'm excited about the weekend and another run with my BRF tomorrow, although rain is in the forecast once again.
What's your weekend plans?

Fitness Friday - 5/6
Happy Friday! Another weekend has arrived! Best of luck to everyone running the Tinkerbell Half Marathon this weekend - I WILL get there one day for this race!! Also, Happy Mother's Day Weekend to all the mom's out there! :)
Currently Training For:
Saturday - The Tour Lafitte that wasn't....which resulted in a 5 mile bike ride instead!
Sunday - Rest Day
Monday - PT routine...legs, cardio, and core
Tuesday - 3 mile run/walk followed by a 3 mile walk with a friend later in the day
Wednesday - I was sore so I planned to take a rest day but the weeds in my flowerbeds were calling my name. I have large flower beds and several of them at that, so this required a lot of squat type movements
Thursday - Finished work on the flowerbeds - all of the weeds are gone, YAY!
Friday - PT routine...legs, cardio, and core
After my first run last week, I realized that I'm going to need to get back into my PT routine if I want my return to running to be as smooth as possible. For Monday's workout, I incorporated my PT routine (squats/lunges/legs) with a little cardio and some core workouts. Hopefully this will help my IT band behave as it should!
Tuesday's run was kind of interesting as I came across a garter snake in the road. Although he's not poisonous, I want nothing to do with snakes so I stayed far away!
Also, my pace is nowhere near where I'd like it to be but let's be honest - this was only my 2nd run since having a baby and it will get there. I'm not worried about it as I did take this run easy with a 3:2 run/walk ratio. I'll continue doing the run/walk method until I feel comfortable pushing my pace again.
I do anticipate a run tomorrow - I may even try to get 4 miles in...we shall see!
Have a great weekend!
What's your weekend plans? Any races going on?
- Tour Lafitte 10 Mile Bike Ride
- 4 Miler on the 4th of July
- Disney's Princess Half Marathon & Glass Slipper Challenge

Fitness Friday - 4/29
It's been SO long since I've had the opportunity to write a Fitness Friday, so today is a VERY exciting day for me!! Yay!
Currently Training For:
Yesterday, I was going to find a YouTube video I could do from home but completely changed my mind. I was also going to wait until I hit four weeks postpartum to begin my return to running, but I just couldn't stand it any longer. (I made it three weeks and two days...haha!)
So, I laced up my shoes and went out for a spin around the block (after securing Brayden with Jason first, of course)!
By the way, my OB's specific instructions were to resume exercise gradually...so that's what I've done!
I had no preconceived notions with this run. It's been at least 9 months since I ran 3 miles straight through. It's also been since December that I even attempted to run, period. My first strategy was to take it slow, test what pace felt comfortable for me, and see how far I could make it before having to stop - the answer was 0.6 miles without pushing myself. I was worried I would have to start all over completely from scratch again, but I'm glad to say I made it at least that far. After that, I began a Jeff Galloway run/walk strategy of a 3 minute run, 2 minute walk until I hit two miles. My original plan was to stop at 2 miles but if you know me, you know I'm all up for a challenge - so I kept going at that run/walk pace, just to test out my 5K time.
By the end of the run, I felt as if I had run the entire 3 miles through mud - my lungs were burning and my legs hurt. This body that spent 9 (wait, no 10) months creating another human being ran it's slowest 5K ever. Was I upset? Nope. How could I be? I'm practically starting over (almost) and will get back where I was, it's just a matter of time! Oh yes and guess what? I'm sore today...Hah!
Summer running? NOT looking forward to that!!
Tomorrow, I'm riding in a local bike ride with my sister-in-law called the Tour Lafitte. This is the largest bike ride in our area and has been going on for many many years. It also benefits Special Olympics. I've always been intrigued and wanted to participate, but was always in training for a running event. When Kayla called and asked if I was interested in a ride, I figured that this year was the year!
For this race, riders can choose between five distance options (64 mi, 50 mi, 40mi, 27 mi and 10 mi). We are going with the shortest, the family 10 mile option.
The one item I needed for this ride was a helmet. Jason had to go out last night for a few items so I told him what I needed. I'm not a serious rider here, so you can laugh all you want but my bike is a mountain bike from Academy and my shiny new helmet (thanks to Jason) is from Walmart! Hey, it will work in a pinch!
Did you also notice that runDisney introduced a new virtual 5K race series yesterday? Just when I was bummed over not being able to participate in ANY runDisney events for 2016, this was announced! After reviewing the details and not thinking about it for too long (because I tend to talk myself out of things sometimes), I bit the bullet and am now registered for the Virtual Running Shorts Series. A few local friends of mine are also registered, so it will be fun to complete some of these together!!
...I mean, look at that medal! How cute is that?!
Last but not least, to celebrate my return to running and my new runDisney venture, I decided to dig into my stash of these bad boys! It was about to expire so I HAD to eat it, right? :)
I hope you all have a great weekend! Anyone have exciting weekend plans? Any races planned?

Another Day, Another Week!
Another week has come and gone in the life of our little family!
Things are going well so far although Brayden decides to party every
morning between the hours of 4 a.m. and 6 a.m., which makes for a sleepy
mom and dad. Other than that, things have been going great! :)
Here's a glimpse at our week so far...
The flowers are blooming in my flower bed and I love it...although the weeds need to be pulled SO bad. I notice them every time I walk through and can't help but cringe. However, they will have to wait!
This past weekend, Brayden had his first major outing and visit to my favorite restaurant, McAlisters! So much fun!!
We also took his newborn pictures last week (when he turned 2 weeks old) and this is a "sneak peak" from my photographer was sent to me a few days ago. Adorable!
Speaking of adorable, that face. I could just stare at him for hours!
...and speaking of staring...I spy a pair of doggie eyes on me! :) Little beggar!
I also might have eaten a little pizza this weekend. My eating habits got so off track during my third trimester...it's time to get them back where they need to be!
As happy as I am to have Brayden here, I can't help but be a little sentimental at the phase of my life that has now ended. Although I'm glad to have more space in his closet now, it was bittersweet to pack up my maternity clothing over the weekend. I AM keeping them though...you never know what the future holds! :)
Madalynn spied an old friend on one of our walks last week. We haven't seen horsey-friend in a long time!
This sweet little boy turned 3 weeks old this past Tuesday. I can't believe how fast time is flying by! On his three week birthday, we visited my work/American Cancer Society Friends and had dinner with my parents. It was such a jam packed day, he was worn out by the time it was all said and done!
He's such a snuggly baby, too...I just love it!
I
managed to get away for a few hours this week to shop for bridesmaids
dresses. A friend of mine is getting married soon and I wanted to wait a
few weeks for the extra baby swelling to go down before trying on a
dress. Although it is a tad bit snug, I was able to order my "normal"
size which made me super happy! I made the decision not to go with the
larger size because it was a little too big and I know by the time I get
to running again in a few weeks, the dress will fit even better!
Over the past few weeks, two birds have been building a nest in one of our plants off the back deck. I was finally able to see the fruits of their hard work - four speckled eggs! It's going to be fun to watch these hatch, grow, and fly off on their own! I just have to keep Madalynn out...crazy dog.
That pretty much sums up our past week! Hope you've had a great one! :)

Why Hello There, Fitness! :)
Patience has never been a virtue of mine. I don't like to wait, especially when given a specific date/time and things don't happen in that time frame (think Brayden's birth date...he was four days late, thank you). So, when my OB's specific instructions stated to "resume exercise gradually", I took her at her word. About a week after he was born, we ventured out for a short walk here and there just to get out of the house, but it wasn't anything serious. Last week, a crazy and ridiculous rain storm that lasted for DAYS came through and hindered my postpartum fitness plans.
When the weekend hit and we were blessed with beautiful weather, I knew I had to take advantage of the opportunity and go for it!
Jason worked nights over the weekend, so we headed out for a walk on Saturday while he was still sleeping. Madalynn, Brayden, and I enjoyed a nice brisk 2 mile walk and by the time we returned, Jason was awake!
He sure looks good in Navy and Orange, IMO! :)
Such a gorgeous day!
After returning the clan home, I ventured out for an additional 2 mile walk on my own. I even attempted a light jog (think like 10 seconds at a time), but that wasn't comfortable so I stopped. The walk was really nice because I was able to take it at my own pace and not one dictated by contractions, bladder spasms, or heart rate issues.
It honestly feels really nice to have my body back (well, somewhat)!
This little girl was whining after my second return home, so we went out for a little venture of our own! She helped round out the last portion of my four mile walk. :)
On Sunday, I decided to take the bike out for a little spin. My sister in law mentioned an upcoming bike "race" that sounded interesting to me, but I hadn't been on the bike in a LONG while, so I decided to test it out!
Overall, it wasn't bad at all....although my legs did burn which felt really NICE for a change! I managed to go 5.25 miles around my neighborhood at a a decent little pace (for me).
If we end up doing the bike ride, I think things will go really well!
All I need now is a helmet and I'll be all set! :)
I cannot wait to get back to running, but that will take a bit longer - I'm still taking it one day at a time over here! :)
If you've ever been pregnant or taken a hiatus from fitness, how was your return to it?
