2020 Enchanted 10K

The weather on the morning of the 2020 Enchanted 10K was COLD. Prior to leaving for our trip, I'd checked the weather forecast so I had an idea of what to expect. The only item I wish I had that I couldn't find in stores were hot hands. Other than that, I felt pretty prepared for race weekend.

That shirt I mentioned in my Expo recap that I purchased from Raw Threads? There it is! Oddly enough, no one had a chance to see it because it stayed covered by a pink sweatshirt the entire race!

One plus to this race weekend is that the buses were in abundant supply. I was very grateful for that!

Race morning tip: because the bus boarding time is so early and there's a lot of downtime prior to running the race, bring your breakfast with you! Mine is usually a clif bar of some sort that I eat on either the bus ride over or while I'm waiting in my corral!

After meandering around the race starting area for a few minutes, I decided to walk over to my corral. My goal was to get as close to the beginning of the corral as I possibly could.

I don't understand runDisney's reasoning on some things and wasn't sure why I was placed in corral C for the 10K and corral B for the half? Looking back I wish I'd waited in the runner relations line at the expo to talk to someone about it but honestly, I was OVER waiting in lines at that point. I'm still scratching my head over this one, though.

For about an hour, this was my view. I found that it was warmer to sit down on the concrete and wait vs standing.

Although it seemed to take a while because it really was chilly out there, we finally made it to the start line!

With a fireworks start and a 3-2-1 gooooo from Carissa, we were off!

Since the 10K was Pocahontas themed, she was at the overpass just at a half mile into the start.

I really enjoy this 10K route. Running in Epcot early in the morning is just beautiful!

Mile 1! The first character I skipped was John Smith, but I couldn't pass up the Governor and Percy!!

I mean, look how cute!

Just after mile 3, we officially entered Epcot from the Cast Member parking lot.

Another fun thing about this route is all of the behind the scenes things you get to see!

They also keep you entertained along the way which is always fun!

On to World Showcase

At China, Mushu was hanging out and I skipped waiting in his line. Another character line I also skipped earlier in the race was Meeko.

As I was attempting to take a selfie in Germany (it's a "thing" I do), a super nice guy asked if I wanted him to take the picture for me!

The empty countries are fun to see. I couldn't wait to try the brand new Regal Eagle Smokehouse later in our trip.

The Festival of the Arts was taking place during this race weekend, too!

Just after mile 4, I saw a huge line and couldn't figure out who it was for. Imagine my surprise when I saw Esmeralda and Quasimodo!! What?!

These were definitely unique and I HAD to stop!

It was also in this line that I spent a good bit of time attempting to figure out what was wrong with my GoPro gimbal. It decided to act crazy that morning and would spin uncontrollably. While doing my research in line, I found out that it was likely a lose wire that I couldn't fix on my own. Whomp whomp. No worries though, we are going to have it replaced.

The sunset in World Showcase was beautiful!

The course also took us beneath the skyliner which was so much fun to run under!

After leaving World Showcase, we looped back to the Boardwalk/Yacht/Beach club resorts.

Another stop I just had to wait for was Mickey! I've never seen him dressed in his racing attire before!

How cute!!

Another unique opportunity was Clarice! I've never seen her before, either.

It was while standing in this line that I heard someone say something about the balloon ladies being a minute behind us. Out of all of my 40+ runDisney races, I've NEVER seen the balloon ladies so I had zero worries about what I overheard. This would come back to haunt me later....

Mile 5 and back into Epcot!

I have no idea why I didn't take a picture of the following fiasco, but it happened regardless.

So, as we followed the course to the front of World Showcase, I spotted the Fairy Godmothers. I'd seen a photo of a runner with them on instagram from earlier that morning and knew I would have to stop. Prior to this race weekend, I'd never seen these fairies (ever) and this was definitely a photo opp I wanted to have. I joined the rather long line and waited about 20 minutes. As I was about 15 runners from the fairies, I heard someone say "there goes the balloon ladies"...

HUH?

Looking back, I realize that I had spent a good bit of time in line for characters (especially the Hunchback ones) and the Germany potty line got me, too.

Nevertheless, I decided to wait it out because I was so close.

Not long after that, one of the bikers came up to our line and told us we were behind pace and likely wouldn't finish. I could still see a TON of walkers though, and still wasn't worried. We were literally 0.6 miles from the finish line. What were they going to do with all of us if we waited?

By the time I was about 5 runners from the fairies, the walker line had thinned out significantly and I could see a line of about 6 bikers riding along behind the final walkers.

The guy who was hanging out on his bike near told us that was it - we could either get the picture with the fairies or cross the finish line but not both.

That's when I freaked out! I wasn't ready to forfeit my challenge medal because of a character picture being that I was so close to the finish line. Instead, I jumped out of line and started sprinting. I bobbed and weaved between runners and didn't look back for a second. Within minutes, I was passing the balloon ladies and knew all would be ok.

To be honest though, that was traumatizing. Seriously traumatizing.

Done!

I didn't hang around the finish area for long. After snagging my food box and water, I headed for the bus to take me back to Saratoga.

The post race food box from this race included cheese which was nice to see again! :)

It took a few minutes for my racing heart to calm down after the course fiasco, but it finally did chill out. My mind couldn't wrap around what had happened, especially since I skipped so many character lines in the beginning of the race. Looking back though, I see that the lines I did wait in were rather long and that's what sucked up most of my time. Oh well - it was a lesson well learned for sure!

With that, we spent the rest of the day Disney Springs and Hollywood Studios with a low key dinner at the Turf Club at Saratoga Springs (delicious and highly recommended).

Now you tell me, have you ever had a "balloon ladies" experience like this one? Let me know in the comments below!

So, You Want To Run Disney?

So, you've decided to participate in a runDisney event but have no clue where to start? Well, look no further! This comprehensive guide will give all the details you need to know to make your first runDisney event a hit!

Run Disney events come in all shapes, distances, and sizes. In fact, it was runDisney who inspired me to re-lace up my running shoes in the first place. For those who are new here, I used to run cross country in high school. Our distance limit was 2 miles and I thought anyone who ran over that was crazy! Little did I know, nine years later, I would get bitten by the running bug while spectating at the full marathon during Walt Disney World's Marathon Weekend. What began as a "I'm just going to run the half marathon next year and call it quits" has turned into 6 full marathons, 30+ half marathons, and many 10K's and 5K's over the following 10 years.

Once you've made the decision to go for it, where do you begin?  There are several races offered at Walt Disney World throughout the year, races in Disneyland Paris, and a couple of virtual race options to run at home. Once you've decided which race you want to run, the fun can begin!

Registration

Registration for the various runDisney races opens approximately 9 months prior to the date of the race. This has been different in the past and is subject to change, so keep an eye out for the individual race you're wanting to register for. A race calendar is usually released by runDisney with all the important dates, so be on the look out for that.

Having an online Disney account will help in the registration process as you will be able to sign in and be ready when registration to opens. (The same login ID used for your Walt Disney World account is the same you will use for runDisney.)

Also, it's important to be online at the start of registration because a lot of these races sell out quickly. For example, my husband likes to do the 10K's (which sell out fast) and I almost missed the window with him on the last registration round. The 10K was literally full and closed for registration within two hours of registration opening - be quick!!

Disney also offers opportunities for the whole family to run! If you have a little one that would like to participate (even infants who crawl), there's literally a race opportunity for everyone!

Training

If you're in need of a training plan, runDisney has connected with Olympian Jeff Galloway and offers different training plans for different experience levels/distances. By utilizing the run/walk method, Jeff has helped many many runners cross the finish line and reach their ultimate goal!

Runners World is also another great place to look for tips, advice, and training plans. In fact, RW is where I started when I began running again.

Packing

Apart from the many many race packing tips out there, my main advice to anyone who is flying in for a race is to keep your running shoes on your person - either in your carry on or on your feet. Also, I prefer to pack my race specific outfit in my carry on, just to be safe (because you never know).

If you're planning on participating in a runDisney race challenge (2 races back to back), I'd also suggest bringing along two pair of running shoes. You never know what the weather will be like on race day and if it rains on your 10K day, there's nothing worse than running in soggy shoes on half marathon day.

I've also included two posts - one on packing for a race with air travel and one on packing for a race without air travel.

Expo

Apart from the race itself, the Expo is one of my favorite parts of a runDisney weekend. The excitement in the air for the upcoming race weekend is literally palpable and I love it! Oh yes, and who could forget shopping? There's definitely shopping - and lots of it!

When you first arrive at the expo, I suggest heading straight to the bib/shirt area to pick those up first.

Also, if there's a piece of runDisney merchandise you really just have to have, you should arrive early-like opening day of the expo-because merchandise can sell out fairly quickly (if you're into that sort of stuff). Our travel plans have always varied on when we arrive - sometimes things are sold out and sometimes they have plenty of merchandise. You really never know what you're going to arrive to. Apart from runDisney merchandise, many other running companies are out there selling theirs as well. Who knows, you might even find a new piece of gear you didn't know existed!

It's so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the expo because it really can be overwhelming. This happened to me at my first expo and honestly, I did not get to enjoy it much at all. So, go into it knowing there's going to be a lot going on, relax, take your time, and enjoy it!!

The Race

You've made it this far, now it's time for the race itself - the highlight of the runDisney experience!

If you're using runDisney transportation, you'll need to be on a bus early! If the race begins at 5:30 a.m., you'll likely need to be on a bus no later than 3 or 3:30 a.m. Insane, I know - but it's their only way to ensure that all 25,000 (ish) runners make it to the start line. During the Princess Half Marathon last year, I attempted to push the time closer to 4 a.m. and what a mistake - we were caught in terrible traffic and it literally took 45 minutes for us to pull up at the start line. I was definitely cutting it close to the start of the race.

Also, the buses don't drop you off at the start line. For the half and full marathons, you still have about a half mile mile walk ahead of you to the starting corrals, so don't get on a bus too late!

Unless you're planning to PR your runDisney race, don't take it too seriously. I have had some of the best "race moments" of my life, playing around in the Magic Kingdom, taking pictures, and just having fun with friends!

Speaking of pictures, be on the lookout for race photographers. They will be located along the race course, at character stops, and in the parks. If you're an AP holder or you purchased Memory Maker for your trip, these photos will be included on your My Disney Expeirence App at no extra charge!

As far as characters go, the lines might seem long, but they typically go pretty quickly because runners are basically jumping in, snagging a picture, then running off again. Character interaction is a super fun part of a runDisney race! Also, take the time to enjoy your surroundings. Not many people can say they ran a race through an actual Disney park!

Despite this, I do need to warn that you still need to be mindful of your time during the race. A 16 minute per mile cutoff is put in place as soon as the last runner crosses the start line (which calculates out to a brisk walk.)  Throughout the race, just be mindful of the time, your mileage, and be on the lookout for the balloon ladies! (If you're unfamiliar with the balloon ladies, you can find out all you need to know with a quick google search!)

Spectators

A few years back, I asked Jason for his best spectator advice and put it all together in a "spectator viewing tips" post. While that post is focused mostly on Marathon Weekend (January races) itself, a lot of the tips remain true for other runDisney race weekends as well.

So, as you can see, runDisney holds a very special place in my heart. Their races are seriously like no other and I'm super excited for those of you who are embarking on their very first runDisney experience! Please drop me an email or message to let me know how your race went and your thoughts regarding the event! I'd love to hear all about it!

Happy running! Have a magical race!

2018 Walt Disney World 10K

Walt Disney World 10K

After a very cold 5K morning, I definitely wasn't looking forward to yet another freezing race start! I've said it before and I'll say it again, the worst part of Dopey Challenge for me was simply getting out of bed, knowing I had to face the cold for several hours before our run was set to begin. I was slightly better prepared this morning, though - I saved my mylar blanket from the day before and had it wrapped around my waist/legs - it was seriously a life saver!

For a full recap of our WDW Marathon Weekend experience, check out these links below:
Walt Disney World 10K

We were appropriately dressed as Anna and Elsa for this 10K and received several funny comments along the course about it being "her" fault for the cold, make it go away, etc!

Walt Disney World 10K

I waited once again until 4 a.m. to head to the bus stop. Thankfully, the line wasn't near as long as the day before which was great!

Walt Disney World 10K

After arriving at the starting area, I found my running buddy and we made our way to coral C.

Walt Disney World 10K

It honestly felt a little warmer this morning and we were able to bundle up close to the runners in our coral which made a world of difference!

Walt Disney World 10K

Before long, our coral had made it to the start line and we were up and running!

Walt Disney World 10K

Side note - I love the new(ish) digital start signs runDisney had out for both the 5K and the 10K!

I absolutely LOVE the Disney 10K course which leads runners out on the highway for a little while (ok, that's not my favorite part) then through World Showcase, the Boardwalk/Yacht/Beach Resorts, and finally back into EPCOT for the finish!

Walt Disney World 10K

While out on the highway, we spotted a couple of characters from Bug's Life but decided to skip that line...so when we saw these parade performers with a super short line, we knew we had to stop!

Walt Disney World 10K

Pinocchio was also inside World Showcase, so it was fun saying hi to him!

Walt Disney World 10K

The sun was just starting to rise as we approached the Boardwalk and Crescent Lake. A few similar characters from the 5K were also out (like Vacation Genie), so we decided to skip them.

Walt Disney World 10K

This dude cracked me up so I had to snap a picture! I'm assuming he was cheering on the Be Our Guest Podcast Lizards? Still hilarious, even though I wasn't an official part of their group! Also along this area, we spotted Lou Mongello from the WDW Radio Podcast - he was out to cheer on his WDW Radio racing team!

Walt Disney World 10K

A fun surprise for us was seeing Duffy in EPCOT! We were a bit of a ways back in line and were told that Duffy was about to go on break - so several people left the line...which meant we got to see him before he left for break! Another fun surprise!

Walt Disney World 10K

A photo with the EPCOT ball was also a must-do!

Walt Disney World 10K

Our final stop of the race was with another set of parade performers! They were standing in the spot where the gospel singers are usually located and they had a super short line, so we had to stop and say hello!

Walt Disney World 10K

We crossed the finish line, got our medals, drinks, and food boxes, then made a bee line for the bus! Although we'd run most of this race, we were both freezing by the time we finished and were ready to warm up!

Walt Disney World 10K

Part 2 of Dopey Challenge, the Walt Disney World 10K was complete! I couldn't comprehend that I still had 39.3 miles to run!

Stay tuned for more from our 2018 WDW Marathon Weekend vacay! Also, if you're interested in Disney vlogs from the remainder of our trip, look to my YouTube channel for updates!  Have a great day!
