Cajun Cup 10K 2021

Happy Thanksgiving week! I hope you are having a wonderful week with your family as we kick off the holiday season!

I'm so thankful races are back. I was reminded how much I missed racing, the atmosphere, the spectators, and above all else the exhilaration that comes with crossing that finish line!

I knew I needed a 10K for a proof of time for princess (since mine was a year too old) but I wanted to find a good race - one I was familiar with and knew I could obtain my goal.

The Cajun Cup 10K is located in a town about an hour away. I've run it several times in the past so I decided on this one since it was familiar to me!

We left SUPER early that morning because Kim was also running the 1 miler which started about a half hour before the 10K.

My friend wasn't a steady runner prior to this, but I thinks he has been bitten by the running bug! :)

Proud of my friend!

It was in the 40's that morning which translates to SO COLD to us down here in the south. I wasn't quite sure what to wear - did I need my ear cover? gloves? a jacket?

I finally decided on nothing extra besides what was already on me (long sleeve dry fit shirt and ankle length tights) and that was the best decision!

This race led us through downtown Lafayette, through a residential neighborhood, then finally over to the Cajun Dome.

The first few miles literally flew by and it was the best feeling! My official goal for this race was to finish under an hour and somewhere in the eight minute per mile range. I knew I wouldn't be anywhere near my 10K PR, but that was ok with me.

I managed to find a group of people who were keeping a somewhat steady pace, so I followed them and it worked!

One thing I will say I'm annoyed about with this race - I clearly heard them say over the loud speaker that it didn't matter where you stood in the starting corral, your time would be calculated from the moment you crossed the start line. It took me a good 20 seconds to cross that start line and although my finish time was 54:44, their official clock time was 55:06 when I crossed the finish line, and that's my official time on the log. I feel like I remember this happening to me at this race before, so I stood closer to the starting line the following time I ran it. Well, I forgot all about that this go round. Oh well, lesson learned for next time!

I'm still proud of myself regardless! I achieved my goal plus some!

After the race, I asked a lady to take our picture and she literally took it crooked. I had to adjust the photo to make it straight. This photo will always make me laugh for that very reason!

Is this how all the cool kids are taking photos now-days? Guess I need to get with the program!

Despite the little time disparity, this race was absolutely perfect! You couldn't have asked for better weather, the sun was shining, the course was mostly flat, and the water supply was perfect. I will definitely be back to run this one again in the future!

Smoothie King was also out with free smoothies after the race! YUM!

Post race offerings in the south are always unique and delicious! You never know what you're going to encounter - for this race, it was jambalya and it was delicious!

After the race, we went shopping for a little while, then stopped for a late brunch at Another Broken Egg. It was all so good!

I absolutely love days where you can put away the worries of the week, spend time with a friend, and enjoy the gorgeous weather. A little retail therapy never hurt anything, either! It truly was a perfect day!

Happy Thanksgiving!! On this holiday week, I'm thankful for so many things, you guys included! Have a wonderful holiday!

Favorite Rock 'n' Roll New Orleans Memories

Following suit with last week's Princess Half Marathon Weekend favorites list, today I'm sharing some of my favorite memories from the Rock N Roll New Orleans Marathon and Half! Since we are leaving today for New Orleans for another race weekend, it seemed fitting! :)

Rock n Roll New Orleans

In 2011, I ran this race with the American Cancer Society's DetermiNation team and had SO much fun! There were so many cheerleaders on the course and raising money for a great cause just made this race even better!

Rock n Roll New Orleans

In 2012, I ran this race again with the American Cancer Society's DetermiNation team, only this time I ran the full marathon. Despite being injured earlier in the year (my first round of IT Band issues), it worked and I made it across the finish line in one piece!

Rock n Roll New Orleans

The fifth year of Rock n Roll New Orleans took place in 2014 and all 5 year runners received a special race bib and their name on the banner! So fun!

Rock n Roll New Orleans

The inaugural race (Rock N Roll Mardi Gras at the time) was held in 2010 and I had the pleasure of running with my friend Heather! We had a blast and I fell in love with this race immediately. It's no wonder I keep returning year after year! :)

Rock n Roll New Orleans

Speaking of running with friends, in 2015 we made a girls weekend trip out of it and had a TON of fun!!

Rock n Roll New Orleans

Last year, I ran this half with my favorite running buddy as a time placer for Dopey. We also ran the full marathon together here in 2013 and had a great time! (This course still holds my marathon PR.)

I am looking forward to so many fun new memories this year! Since we are making a 3 day weekend out of it, I'm looking forward to possibly running the 5K on Saturday morning (if there's availability to register at the Expo) and spending time in New Orleans with some of my favorite people. I'm also looking foward to seeing all of the course enhancements that Rock N Roll has made this year! Stay tuned to my social media accounts (linked up top) for more on our fun-filled New Orleans weekend!

Have you ever run a Rock 'n' Roll race? Thoughts?

Finally, a video recap of my experience with the Walt Disney World Marathon is up and ready to go! I mean seriously, where else can you do that during a marathon?!

Vlog: Walt Disney World Half Marathon

The 2018 Walt Disney World Half Marathon was our 3rd leg of Dopey's Challenge and although the temps were still super cold, we had a ton of fun!
Walt Disney World Half Marathon

This race weekend will always hold a special place in my heart as my first half marathon took place on this weekend back in 2010! It's hard to believe that 8 years have passed so quickly!

Today, I'm sharing with you a video recap of this half marathon. My favorite part of the race was the new course change where runners enter the Magic Kingdom under the train station which was so much fun!

Thanks for following along with my Dopey Challenge journey! Stay tuned for more from our Marathon Weekend vacation!

Santa Hustle 5K Recap - Galveston, Texas

Yesterday, I participated in the Santa Hustle 5K which was located in Galveston, Texas. I traveled with a group of ladies (my sister in law and her friends) and they all took part in the Half.

The idea for this race first came to me after completing the Gulf Coast Half at 16 weeks pregnant. The Santa Hustle was only 9 weeks away - how much could change in 9 weeks? HAH. Good one. My last long run attempt was a few weekends ago and I was able to make it to 8 miles before the round ligament pain kicked in. I also knew I would be traveling a lot prior to this race and didn't want to push it - so, I made a last minute decision to stick with the 5K. I am super grateful that the logical side of my brain kicked in for this one because I woke up on Friday morning and apparently the crud bug visited me again for the third time this pregnancy. 5K, yes. Half Marathon? NO.

We left Saturday morning for Galveston and it was a gorgeous day - the weather was perfect for a race weekend at the beach!

We also stayed at the San Luis which was one of the host resorts and it was gorgeous!!

Packet pickup was at the San Luis and it was super easy - no long lines and straight to the point!

The view from our room! Isn't it gorgeous?!

The lobby of the San Luis, all decorated for Christmas!

After settling in our rooms, we decided to go over to Moody Gardens for the Festival of Lights. I'd never been to Moody Gardens or the lights, so this was a neat experience. It's $10 per person to enter and well worth it, in my opinion!

Basically, a walking path is set up throughout the lights and you just follow the crowd.

There's different sections of lights, food stops along the way, even campfires for roasting smores! YUM!

My favorite was the narrated part that told the Christmas story.

Our crew at the lights!

After dinner at McAlisers, we headed back to the hotel and called it a night.

Flat Karen!

Kayla and I also tried out our Santa beards and hats!

The sunrise the morning of the race was gorgeous!

Our Santa group, ready for the race! After saying goodbye to my half marathon friends, I walked around for a few minutes while waiting on the 5K to begin. (The half began 30 minutes prior to the 5K).

Apparently I lined up WAY far back although I could have been much closer. My goal was to stick to a 3:2 as long as possible, then walk the remainder of the race and I didn't want to be in anyone's way.

Y'all. This guy was hysterical! He was drinking eggnog out of a moose cup! (Christmas Vacation, anyone??)

After 15 minutes of wave starts, I finally made it to the start line...and was kicking myself for not lining up closer to the start. Oh well, lesson learned.

Chick-fil-a cows were out to say hello!

The best part of this race included cookie and candy stations along the route! (The Half had these, too!)

ME! I was starving, having eaten almost two hours before finally starting the race!

YEAH!

This route led us along the downtown historical area of Galveston  and in front of some gorgeous homes!

Love this!

I was able to keep a 3:2 cycle until about 23 minutes or so, then I began exclusively walking.

One more to go!

Next stop...CANDY!

Hello! This race was RIGHT up my alley!

M&M's? Yes, please!

Before long, the finish line was in view! I finished somewhere in the 45 minute range but can't remember the exact time.

After the race, I drove back to the hotel to shower, change, and wait on a text from Kayla.

Y'all, these medals for the half were so adorable! They sparkle and spin AND are a Christmas theme. I've already sent a text to my BRF as I definitely need a redemption race next year and she agreed! We'll see what the next year has to hold as I'm not making any concrete plans for 2016 just yet! :)

Overall this was a neat race and I really enjoyed the experience! I'll definitely be back!

Have you participated in any Christmas themed races this year? If so, which ones?
