Long Run Sunday

Yesterday, I did something I NEVER do - I went for my long run on a Sunday morning!

That wasn't in the original plans, however.

On Saturday morning, both Brayden and I were startled awake by crazy thunder and lightning. He woke up at 5:30 a.m., just a few minutes before my alarm was set to go off. I went into his room to soothe him and although my tactics worked, he couldn't fall back asleep because the thunder and lightning was literally rolling through every 30 seconds or so.

After listening for a few minutes, I knew our group run would be called off due to safety. I'm all about running in the rain but lightning...no way.

My running buddy and I texted back and forth several times and after seeing a facebook post from our little running circle, we decided to call it off until Sunday morning.

It rained off and on for a good bit of the morning. Luckily, Brayden fell back asleep which meant I could return to my bed as well! We both slept until 9 a.m.! (I think that's only happened like once since he's been born!)

Sunday morning arrived bright and early...and so did the humidity! I have one main reason I never run on Sunday mornings - church. Follow a long run up with getting ready for church and getting Brayden ready all in the span of a few hours...and looking halfway decent on my part? Negative.

Well, I decided to go for it anyway. It was the end of my first week of Dopey Training and I didn't want to set a bad precedent for the remainder of my training. Although Jason worked the night before (and had to work again that night), he so graciously agreed to watch Brayden for a couple of hours so I could enjoy my run. (He's truly a saint!)

My running buddy and I enjoyed our 5 mile run along the lake. It was fun seeing fellow running groupies out there, too!

Once I arrived home, Jason had Brayden fed, dressed, and ready for church (even though Jason himself wasn't going to church because he had to work again that night)! I sent Jason to bed, then somehow had time to shower, wash my hair, blow dry and flat iron my hair, put makeup on, cook breakfast, and watch Brayden while doing all of the above. Bonus: Brayden and I were on time for church! How, I have no idea!

Although I couldn't do it every single Sunday, I did enjoy my Sunday morning long run with my running buddy and I REALLY enjoyed my chance to sleep in on Saturday morning!

Oh yes, and I might have enjoyed one of these mickey rice cripsy treats on Sunday afternoon! I have a small stash and this one was close to expiring. I either needed to toss it or eat it and well, I chose eat it! :)

Do you prefer long runs on Saturday or Sunday mornings?

Fitness Friday - Dopey Challenge Week 1

Hi there! Long time no Fitness Friday!

Well, with the start of a new training plan for Dopey Challenge 2018, Fitness Friday has returned! I enjoyed my break from being on a training cycle but now that a new one has begun, I'm super thrilled and looking forward to another journey to 26.2 (or 48.6 in this case)!

Fitness Friday

Currently Training For:

  • Dopey Challenge 2018 - Walt Disney World
  • Rock n Roll New Orleans Half Marathon 2018 - New Orleans, LA
Sunday - Rest Day
Monday - 3 mile run and first day of Dopey Training!!
Tuesday - Rest Day
Wednesday - Cross Training with the Tone It Up Girls
Thursday - 3 mile run
Friday - Squats/Lunges/PT routine

I decided to begin my Dopey Training a day early because with the start of summer in the south also came the threat of a Tropical Storm named Cindy. Oh boy.

Fitness Friday

Brayden didn't let Cindy phase him although the "feels like" temperatures should have scared us both!

Fitness Friday

During the run, I listened to my friends over at The Disney Exchange and they kept me entertained and amused the entire 3 miles!

Fitness Friday

I seriously love these guys! If you haven't listened, you should go check them out!

Fitness Friday

It's only June and the heat/humidity is awful. What am I going to do come August? Oy.

Fitness Friday

My second run was planned for Wednesday after work but Cindy had other plans. Church was also cancelled that evening, so I enjoyed a little bonus time with Jason and Brayden!

Fitness Friday

Yeah, I pretty much live smack dab in the middle of Cindy's projected path. Lovely.

We were released home from work early on Thursday afternoon, so I scoped out the weather channel to see if running would even be a possibility that evening.

Fitness Friday

Sure enough, around 3 p.m., I saw a clearing in the weather, so I made a break for it! The remains of Cindy were passing through and the wind was kicking pretty good, but there was no rain, thankfully! This wasn't my first time running through a tropical storm and I'm sure it won't be my last!

Fitness Friday

I somehow managed three miles although I had to stop and walk a bit on the last mile back home. It's not fun and definitely not easy to run through a head wind!

Fitness Friday

Not long after I returned home, it began to rain again! Talk about perfect timing!

On Wednesday, I clicked over to the Tone It Up girls web page for a new cross training workout. This one encompassed the entire body and included a lot of squats and lunges which was just what I needed!

Saturday morning is a planned long run with my running buddy! Jeff's plan calls for 3 miles but I think we will go for 5 or 6 as that's been our Saturday routine for a little while now. After Saturday's run, week 1 of Jeff Galloway's Dopey Training plan will be complete!

I hope you all have a great Friday and an awesome weekend!

Where will your adventures this weekend take you?

Favorite Summer Treats

Happy Summer! Although it's felt like summer here in Southwest Louisiana for weeks now, I can officially say that summer has arrived in full force, complete with a tropical storm! What a way to kick off the season. The portions of Tropical Storm Cindy (the "eye") that hit SWLA only left us with minimal flooding, although other areas of the south can't say the same. Sad face....stay safe, guys!

By Thursday afternoon, all remnants of the storm will hopefully have passed through so life can resume as normal, including Dopey training!

With summer's heat and humidity and all things related, I like to enjoy a cold, sweet treat on occasion, especially after a hot run. I'm a sweets fan (bad, I know) and after a long Saturday run in the ridiculous heat and humidity, I usually crave all the cold things!

Summer Treats

#1 Fruit

Strawberries, blueberries, watermelon, kiwi, grapes, bananas...you name it, I love it! Watermelon is definitely a summer favorite for sure!

#2 Gatorade

I guess it's not truly a "treat" but it's a necessity for me on long hot summer training runs, especially while training with longer distances!

Summer Treats

#3 Snoballs

Hello...who wouldn't enjoy one of these after a hot long run?! They are the perfect way to cool down, although you have to eat fast if you're attempting to enjoy it outside!

Summer Treats

#4 Smoothies

I know I mentioned it on Monday, but a local juicery opened here and oh my goodness...so many healthy and delicious options were available. I know I'll be a frequent visitor here this summer for sure! Also, nothing beat a nice homemade cold smoothie with a frozen banana and a little fruit...pure heaven!

#5 Iced Coffee

Aaaah yes...a nice cold coffee on a warm summer morning is the perfect way to begin the day! I enjoy these often during the summer!

With all of these yummy treats, I'm destined to survive marathon training during the hot and humid summer months!

What's your favorite summer treat?

Dopey Challenge Game Plan

After much debated thought and research, I've made a somewhat concrete training plan for the 2018 Dopey Challenge at Walt Disney World. If you aren't familiar with Dopey's Challenge, it's a 5K, 10K, Half Marathon, and Full Marathon all on consecutive days. I'm still a bit in shock that I actually signed up for this race....

As a veteran marathoner (although I sorta feel like a newbie since it's been SO long since my last full marathon), I kind of have an idea of what has and hasn't worked for a training plan and my cranky knees.

This is the first year since I began running that I don't have a running coach lining out a training plan for me and telling me what to do. To be honest, that kind of scares me. Dopey's Challenge - it's 48.6 miles in 4 days. Y'all. Seriously, what was I thinking??

Thankfully, the folks over at runDisney have utilized an amazing individual who has a wealth of knowledge on all things running, and he created a Dopey Training Plan! Yes I'm talking about Jeff Galloway and yes...I love you runDisney!

Dopey Training

Jeff's training plan for the 2018 Dopey Challenge officially begins today and I am SO excited. After Princess, I took a little break from a rigid training plan because my brain and body needed a break. Now, I feel refreshed and ready to go once again!

Dopey Training

One thing I love about Jeff's training plans is the functionality of them! His Dopey plan has runners training three times per week at the majority with a few four day weeks in there as well.Three days per week? I can handle that!

I've used the concept behind Jeff's training plans where he has runners run a training run or two at a distance longer than their upcoming race. This worked incredibly well for me as I was able to obtain a sub 2 half marathon using this training mentality.

Dopey Training

For 48.6 miles however, my main goal is to finish the full marathon upright and not break any crazy PR's, so that's where a few of my tweaks to this training plan come into play.
  • On three occasions, this training plan has runners tackling distances over the 20 mile mark. Sadly, I'm pretty sure my knee would not agree with that idea, so I'm cutting these three down to one 20 mile run that I'll tackle some time in December.
  • In total, I'll have several 13-18 mile training runs as well, scattered throughout the 29 week training period.
  • This plan also includes about four "mock Dopey" weekends with training runs/walks back to back. I think I'm going to cut these down to two total.
  • For the three day a week training weeks, I'm going to add one day of cross training as well as my PT/squats/lunges routine throughout.
As I've mentioned before, I'm not a running coach nor am I an expert at this. However, this will be my 6th full marathon and I sort-of have an idea of what has and hasn't worked for my IT Band issues in the past. Hopefully, all goes well and come January, I'll have a shiny new medal (or six) to show for it and I'll remain injury free! :)

Dopey, here I come!!

Today I'm linking up with these lovely ladies (Erika, Marcia and Patty) for Tuesdays on the Run!

Father's Day Weekend 2017

This past weekend was jam packed with family and fun times! I so appreciate weekends like this one and the fact that we have the opportunity to spend time with our families. Hug your peeps and spend time with them as often as you can!

Before the weekend began, I stopped by a brand new little juice-joint down the road from work. The options all sounded delicious and I couldn't decide which one to order.

My mom went with a peach smoothie and I had a blueberry one. I can't wait to return to try something else!

We also spent a little time with my long-time friend Jane and her sweet little girl!

Brayden and her little girl are only 6 weeks apart and so adorable together! It's been fun to watch them grow! Their fist picture together was at the 4th of July last year!

Precious.

On Saturday morning, we had breakfast with Jason's family and we had so much fun! It was great having everyone together to celebrate the special men in our lives!

After leaving Jason's parent's home, we went straight to my parent's house for a crawfish boil!

His outfit worked for the occasion! :)

Until Saturday, we hadn't eaten crawfish this year, so this was fun!

This seems to be our yearly tradition - as we've done a crawfish boil each summer for the past several years!

Delicious!

My brother and sister-in-law brought a Cookie Cake for my dad and Jason! That cookie cake was DEVOURED and didn't last long!

A few of my favorite dads!

Brayden also had his first taste of cookie cake and he was smitten!

He kept asking for more! Hah!

After dessert, we played a few games including "Say Anything" and "The Game of Things"! These are always fun, especially with my crazy family!

Last but not least, I have to show you my  new outfit! So, Kohls posted an adorable outfit on their Insta story last week and I loved it so much, I decided to try and hunt it down. It didn't take long for me to find both the top, bottom, and shoes in store...and I had a bonus 20% off coupon! I was so excited! Since Brayden was born, I haven't purchased many new outfits for myself, so this was a fun little splurge! Thanks, Kohls....this is proof that advertising works! :)

I hope you all had a great Father's Day Weekend! How was yours spent?

Vlog: 2017 Tinker Bell Half Marathon

The last and final video recap of our Tinker Bell Half Marathon is of the Half Marathon itself! We had a blast running the half marathon throughout the Disneyland Parks and the streets of Anaheim!

Check out our half marathon adventures in the video below! :)

Happy Father's Day to all of the dad's out there! We are having a crawfish boil on Saturday with my family and I can't wait!! I hope you have a fabulous weekend!

Thursday Training Thoughts

This past week was quite an interesting week.

It's been raining practically non-stop (until yesterday) which left the temps warm and incredibly humid.
  • Despite the crazy weather, running has been going great! My knee has cooperated and I haven't had any issues (thankfully)! Although marathon training season hasn't yet begun (soon, though) my current plan is to keep up with our base mileage for now.
  • Speaking of training plans, Jeff Galloway's training plans for Marathon Weekend are available now on the runDisney website! I'm going do a modified version of his Dopey schedule and I'm so excited to begin! Dopey training starts on June 27th so if you're thinking about using Jeff's plans, get them downloaded now! Also, Jeff has been so gracious to share his training tips with all of us - if you'd like to check them out, click here!
  • Back to my week - I'd planned to go for a run on Monday but when I stepped outside, I felt as if I was in a sauna. I was literally short of breath just walking from my work building to my car which is maybe the length of two football fields. I felt as if a wet, warm washcloth had been placed over my face and I was trying to breathe through it. CRAZY. I knew a run was going to be impossible that day so instead, I did a little cross training at my house (in the AC) and even involved Brayden in some of my routine. I figured a 25+ pound kid made for adequate weights for squats and lunges....and he loved it! Bonus!
  • On Tuesday, I attempted to outsmart the weather and went for a nice little lunch time run. I was in a hurry so I pushed myself and when I saw the time for my first mile, I knew I had to keep going. Sadly, I didn't take my own advice and had ZERO hydration along the way. Thankfully the rain had not yet passed through and the humidity was down so it wasn't horribly warm out at that point (like Monday)!

  • Lately, thanks to an idea from Meranda, I've been setting aside a little time to work on my race scrapbook. I was terribly behind (as in...2013 behind) but am now caught up to 2014! Each page in my scrapbook is themed around a different race and is filled with pictures and the bib from that race (sometimes a race takes up 2 or 3 pages if there's a lot to share). It's so much fun re-living these memories from years ago and I'm excited I have the opportunity to work on this project once again!

Did you know that yesterday was Flag Day? I had to read up a bit on the holiday itself because I didn't realize all the day entailed! Not only is it a holiday to celebrate the adoption of the flag of the United States, but it's also the birthday of the US Army! Pretty neat!

That's all for now! How are you surviving summer time running? How do you preserve your race memories?

Disneyland

For today's Wordless Wednesday, I'm going back to California and my recent Disneyland trip where I ran the Tinker Bell Half Marathon! This trip was an incredibly short one where I only had one day to explore the parks, so I spent my entire time in Disneyland itself. We were able to ride several rides, eat yummy food, and simply enjoy the day!

Today's Wordless Wednesday Host: Deb at Focused on the Magic

Enjoy a small glimpse into the Happiest Place on Earth! :)
