Happy Birthday is a Victory Song! :0)

 acs1

Last week, I attended the American Cancer Society’s 2010 Awards and Honors Banquet.  In case you haven’t already noticed, I work a LOT with American Cancer Society and if you haven’t already heard me talk about it, I’m an RN with a specialization in Oncology so there’s the connection with ACS! :0)

acs2

Our Mayor spoke…

acs3

…and our official guest speaker was a 17 year old SURVIVOR!  Wow…her story was so touching and I don’t think there was a dry eye in the room!  This is the reason why we do what we do!!

 acs5

My boss received the highest honor of the night!  2010 American Cancer Society Volunteer of the Year!!! :0)

acs6 acs7

Our Oncology crew!  :0)

acs16

Katie and I!  Katie works for the American Cancer Society and will be running her FIRST Half Marathon in 13 days with ACS’s DetermiNation team!!  Go Katie go! :0)

 acs21

I love ACS’s theme this year!!  It’s so true! :0)  This picture reminds me of my DetermiNation journey!  Training for a Half Marathon and fundraising for the American Cancer Society…when I cross that finish line, it will be a true victory as well as an emotional one, I’m sure.

I’m dedicating this race to the memory of my Grandfather as well as his friend who both lost their lives to cancer.

acs22

This speaks for itself.

acs24

This banquet was held at the same place as our Wedding Reception.  In honor of that special night, we recreated our “red wall” pose! :0)

wedding24

Well sort of!  The angle is a little off and the clothes are slightly different but that’s ok! :0)

Back to ACS and DetermiNation, I’m very close to reaching my fundraising goal!  Will you take part and support my cause?

Don’t forget to stop by my Sweaty Band/Bondi Band Raffle going on here!  There’s just 4 days left to enter! :0)

Thanks to everyone who has already shown their support!!

Really really dumb!

Yesterday, I woke up with an achiness and soreness in my back.  The achiness went straight down my spine like a sore muscle and it felt as if I had worked out the day before after not doing so for a long time.

I also noticed that my inner thighs were sore.  I was so confused trying to think back on the events of the weekend.  I did run with my friends on Saturday, but we took it nice and easy and slow and were able to talk/laugh/joke the entire run.

That couldn’t be it.

I got to work and I thought “hmm…am I having some sort of strange delayed muscle soreness from after the race?”  Dumb, I know cause it’s been 2 weeks now since my Marathon, but you never know.  This idea sounded really stupid to me (I’m a nurse for crying out loud) but I had nothing else to go on, so I went with it.

I called Heather and told her all about it.  We tried to reason and figure out what was wrong with me.

I hung up the phone with Heather and thought some more.  I reviewed my day on Sunday step by step.

OH.
MY.
GOSH.

Karen, you are officially an idiot.  I felt SO dumb.

I spent an hour and a half in my flower beds on Sunday cutting out all of the dead stuff.  My time was very broken up in the flowerbeds cause I worked a little, got chased by this massive scary bee, came back inside, waited a while, then resumed my work.  (I’m sure that was pretty funny to see!)

I didn’t overexert myself and I never broke a sweat so that’s why the thought of my flower bed shenanigans never crossed my mind!  However, I was constantly up and down and up and down (like doing squats) and I must have worked some muscle groups that haven’t been worked in a while!

Wow.  I don’t think things through sometimes and I make myself look really stupid in the process. I’m sorry for the totally ridiculous phone call, Heather!  Can I blame it on “Marathon Brain”?  A lot of my patients say they have “chemo brain” and I’ve also heard of “baby brain” (from pregnancy hormones) so is there a such thing as “Marathon Brain”?  If not, I think there should be.  Cause I have it.

I do however have a BATTLE WOUND from the Marathon!  Woohoo!  I don’t get blisters (or I don’t usually get blisters) thankfully, so this is a different kind of battle wound (but it’s still on my foot!).

If you’ve been following my blog for a while, you’ll know that I broke a bone in my right foot this past summer playing softball (my first ever broken bone!).

Img_0652circled

I probably started running on it about a week too early but through all my training, it only bothered me one time – a large mileage week.

I was really worried about it with the Marathon but thankfully, my right foot never bothered me.

Instead, it was my left foot that gave me issues!  After the race, I started having a pain in my left foot (same spot as the broken bone on my right foot) and it felt funny when I walked.  It wasn’t excruciating pain and it felt fine when I walked in tennis shoes.

Well, days after the Marathon, this funky bruise popped up…

foot

I know it’s hard to see and this picture does not do it justice!  It was very dark and round.  Really strange.  What else is strange is it’s the pain on my left foot is the same exact spot as what I broke on my right foot!

I guess I broke a blood vessel or something, I don’t know!

That’s my claim to a battle wound and I’m sticking with it! :0)

Official 2011 Disney Marathon Race Photos – ASI Photography

Thanks to the lovely photographers over at ASI Photography, I now have a new set of pictures to work with! :0)  Here’s my “official” professional photographs from the Disney Marathon.  I’m sure you’re all tired of hearing about the Marathon now since this is the 6th post about it but I’m still excited and I can’t help myself! :0)

We ran through Epcot the first time in the dark!  Very interesting! :0)  Something funny about the 2nd picture…I know the girl in purple…Courtney….but I wasn’t actually running with her!  We just happened to be in the same place at the same time! It’s Courtney from I Cano Do This! funny if you ask me!

The Fairy Godmother…I needed some Fairy Race Dust sprinkled on me!  Hehe! :0)  (That was especially for Heather!)

Last year for the Half, they didn’t get one single picture of me running out of the castle.  This time, I knew exactly where to run to make sure that didn’t happen again!

Not only did I get one….

74488-3107-028f

I got two….

2011 Disney World Marathon Monday – Marathon Weekend Recap 5

Marathon Monday was a busy one!  We booked breakfast at the Crystal Palace for 8:30 a.m.  Our plan for the day was to spend Marathon Monday in the Magic Kingdom (Heather and Bobby were going to join us for lunch!).  Disney gave each Marathon runner a free ticket into one of their parks on this day so we could enjoy ourselves after the race!

On our way there, we took a boat from WL to the Contemporary, where we ran across these….

    DSC_0532

Yikes!  That’s DEFINITELY a NO!  I’m taking the doors on the first floor! :0)

    DSC_0533

I have NO clue what possessed me, but we decided not to take the escalators up to the Monorail – instead, we walked to the MK!  (I’ve never done this before and it was a neat little walk!)!

The main problem I kept running into is that I couldn’t walk very fast.  Jason is used to my “hospital walk”and he got way ahead of me a LOT.  I had to tell him many times to SLOW DOWN!  Haha!

    DSC_0534

We were able to get my ticket certified with no problems, then we were allowed inside early because we had a Character breakfast planned!

    DSC_0537 DSC_0540

The weather did a number to my hair. Ugh.

    DSC_0549

I know we were just at the Crystal Palace the day before for lunch, but we didn’t mind! :0)  I like this place!

    DSC_0548

I posted this picture on Facebook with the caption… “Mickey Medal or Mickey Waffle?”

Well, my wonderful husband who thinks he’s funny left the comment “ONE?!  Try SIX, piggy!”  I saw his comment and responded, “JASON!  I didn’t even eat that ONE!”

This of course brought on a slew of comments… “You just ran a Marathon, you can eat as many waffles as you want!”  “You don’t need to worry about the calories you look fine…” etc.

Oh boy.  My husband just thought he was being funny and had no idea what he started.  He has NEVER told me that I couldn’t eat something or prevented me from eating anything.  I had to come to his rescue and defend him!  What a mess!  Hah!

    Anyway, on with breakfast!

    DSC_0550

This was too cute!  Jason and Eeyore did the fist pound, then a slide.

After we ate, we decided to walk (I hobbled) over to Tomorrowland but on the way, we ran into these ladies!  They were SO funny!  The one in red reported that she has a contraption in her house a “tread” from the “mill” and she was going to start using it again soon.  The one in gold said that she’s allergic to hay and shouldn’t go anywhere near this “mill”.  It gave her “tingles” just thinking about it!  Hehe!

    DSC_0561

After our Tomorrowland adventures, we found Heather and Bobby, and continued our hobble around the Magic Kingdom!

    DSC_0576 DSC_0580

We had lunch reservations for Liberty Tree Tavern and on our way there, we saw these guys!  My husband is a trumpet player (it was his first degree) so he loves watching various bands around the parks!

    DSC_0587

Our lunch was SO good!  Especially the dessert! YUM!

    DSC_0589

Sometime after lunch and walking around Liberty Square, the heavens decided to open and a monsoon hit the Magic Kingdom. It was awful!

    DSC_0605

We took soaking wet pictures with Mickey and Minnie….

    DSC_0609

…and I hated it.  I wanted these to be good so I could frame them.  I looked like a drowned rat.  I think this started my grumpiness because after these pictures, I was in a bad mood the rest of the afternoon!

    DSC_0610

    It POURED. Seriously.

    DSC_0614 DSC_0615

I was so unhappy that Bobby told me to stop whining.  Haha!

    DSC_0620 DSC_0622

We decided to leave at this point.  Our shoes were squishing and I was soaked (wearing jeans) up to my THIGHS!  Ugh.

    DSC_0628

Your immune system is at it’s lowest for 48 hours following your Marathon run, so I knew that I had to get changed, and fast!

We saw Santa on our way out! :0)

    DSC_0624

I couldn’t wait changed and get dry!  We stayed in our room for a few minutes but we didn’t want to waste our Marathon Monday tickets so after we changed and dried off, we pretty much turned around and went right back to the Magic Kingdom! :0)

    DSC_0641 DSC_0645

    The steam off the water!

    DSC_0648 DSC_0655

    Feeling better!

    DSC_0664

I’m a dork I know but I HAD to get a “retake” with Mickey and Minnie!  I was much happier with this photo!!! :0)

    impossiblw

I also love this one!!  Cause it’s true…you CAN do the impossible and it’s fun to try! :0)

    DSC_0675

We left after night hit and made our way to Fort Wilderness for the Hoop Dee Doo Review!  If you haven’t seen this show, you definitely should!  It’s hilarious!

    DSC_0684 DSC_0688

    Having a great time!!! :0)

    DSC_0730 DSC_0741

We went to Downtown Disney after the show and shopped around for a while, then made our way back to the Wilderness Lodge for a little shut eye! :0)

Over all, I had a good Marathon Monday minus the RAIN!  That wasn’t Disney’s fault, though.  It was a great day!!! :0)

    Someone on Twitter reported:

“Disney World was the most hobblingest place on earth today!  Marathon Monday!!”

I think I have to agree with that statement! :0)
