runDisney Virtual Marathon Weekend Kids Races 2021

Hello hello! Good morning and happy Monday! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and are doing well. I wasn't here on the blog much around the holiday season, but I did continue the tradition of weekend vlogs throughout the holidays. If you missed those, check them out over on YouTube! :)

A few weeks ago (on what should have been Marathon Weekend), Brayden ran the Virtual Marathon Weekend Kids Races - 100 m dash, from home of course!

Although I'm not a huge fan of the idea of the runDisney virtual races, I do love that they provide everything you need to run your race from home - it's all tucked neatly in your runDisney online account.

I initially signed Brayden up for the kids races for a couple of reasons - first, he's never run a kids race during marathon weekend and I loved the medal. He also loves Chip and Dale so that worked out perfectly! Second, I thought this would give us all a chance to get outside and so something fun...and I was right! Brayden LOVED it!

We printed the start/finish line signs as well as his bib and off we went. For authenticity, we had to crinkle the bib a little bit prior to starting the race. You know how it is!

Along with the start/finish line and bib options, Disney even threw in a virtual Marathon Weekend playlist from spotify. We listened to this while running the race, riding in the car, at home, and I even took it along for my long run that day!

Before he knew it, the race was over and it was time to celebrate! I'm pretty sure he giggled the entire way! :)

With no Mouse at the finish line to high five at the end, I had to do! Brayden agreed that mom was a pretty good alternative to Mickey!

runDisney even shared Brayden's fun accomplishment to their instagram!

...and with that, our version of a virtual marathon weekend was over. We had a lot of fun but can't wait to run them in person in the (hopefully) near future!

Did you participate in any virtual marathon weekend festivities? If so, which ones did you do?

runDisney Kids Races 2019

During the Wine & Dine Half Marathon Weekend, Brayden participated in his second 100m dash as part of the Kids Races.

Although we had a lot of fun, this experience was quite different from our last 100m dash (from January of 2018). I have a very cautious kid who likes to see things before he's convinced that it's ok. Although I felt as if I prepared him well for this race experience by watching the video recap from 2018, he got a little confused as to what was going on mid-dash...but more on that later.

The runDisney Kids Races are held at the Track & Field Complex at ESPN's Wide World of Sports.  The races follow a schedule and you'll see the various race times noted in your event guide. Also, the races almost always begin with the 100m dash and go from there.

We picked up his bib the day before when we visited the Expo for our Wine & Dine races. He was super sleepy when we visited the Expo and not in the mood for pictures!

We arrived at the Track & Field complex a few minutes early and headed straight for the "corral" area. I loved that they had cups of water available for the kids to drink while waiting!

A perk to arriving early and hanging out near the corral area is the crowd. You definitely get an early jump on getting in line and being one of the first ones to finish the race.

This is the crowd that was in front of us (maybe 2 waves of runners)...

...and this is the crowd that was lined up behind us...

Also, please note that there are activities going on this entire time for kids to play so you don't HAVE to stand in this line. One thing that Carissa (the announcer) kept encouraging parents to do was go play with their kids, then return once the line died down a bit. I believe there's at least an hour time frame for the 100m dash and it does go fairly quickly.

Now, here is where I made my mistake. Because we had friends waiting on us at one of the parks, we knew we were a little strapped for time and wanted to get in and out fairly quickly. We were stationed in line where we were not able to watch any of the runners/kids from waves ahead of us and that's what I should have done differently. Oh well, I know better now for next time!

We lined up on the yellow line and before we knew it, it was time to run!

Brayden did GREAT running at the start, but midway down the track, he got a little scared and maybe a little confused as to what was going on and he wanted to hold my hand the remainder of the way. (Not a problem with me, I'm just sharing our race experience.) Once I pointed Mickey out to him though, he let go of my hand and ran right over to him for a high five!

Priceless and definitely the highlight of the race!

Next time, I'm going to let him actually watch other kids running down the track before we line up for his race. Don't get me wrong, he did not have a bad experience at all, he wasn't screaming or crying, etc...I just think a little preparation ahead of time will help him better understand what's going on and prevent any scared feelings or confusion on his part.

So, if you have a cautious kid like mine, that's my tip - let them actually see what's going on before they get on the track to run for themselves.

After the finish line, kids are handed their medals as well as a banana and other goodies!

Brayden LOVED wearing his medal the rest of the day!

After the race, we didn't hang out long and said goodbye to another 100m dash!

For Princess, I'm going to take my own advice with the line up on the day of the race and see if it makes a difference in our running experience! I'll keep y'all posted...

Have your kids ever participated in a runDisney Kids Race event? If so, which one? What were your thoughts?

So, You Want To Run Disney?

So, you've decided to participate in a runDisney event but have no clue where to start? Well, look no further! This comprehensive guide will give all the details you need to know to make your first runDisney event a hit!

Run Disney events come in all shapes, distances, and sizes. In fact, it was runDisney who inspired me to re-lace up my running shoes in the first place. For those who are new here, I used to run cross country in high school. Our distance limit was 2 miles and I thought anyone who ran over that was crazy! Little did I know, nine years later, I would get bitten by the running bug while spectating at the full marathon during Walt Disney World's Marathon Weekend. What began as a "I'm just going to run the half marathon next year and call it quits" has turned into 6 full marathons, 30+ half marathons, and many 10K's and 5K's over the following 10 years.

Once you've made the decision to go for it, where do you begin?  There are several races offered at Walt Disney World throughout the year, races in Disneyland Paris, and a couple of virtual race options to run at home. Once you've decided which race you want to run, the fun can begin!

Registration

Registration for the various runDisney races opens approximately 9 months prior to the date of the race. This has been different in the past and is subject to change, so keep an eye out for the individual race you're wanting to register for. A race calendar is usually released by runDisney with all the important dates, so be on the look out for that.

Having an online Disney account will help in the registration process as you will be able to sign in and be ready when registration to opens. (The same login ID used for your Walt Disney World account is the same you will use for runDisney.)

Also, it's important to be online at the start of registration because a lot of these races sell out quickly. For example, my husband likes to do the 10K's (which sell out fast) and I almost missed the window with him on the last registration round. The 10K was literally full and closed for registration within two hours of registration opening - be quick!!

Disney also offers opportunities for the whole family to run! If you have a little one that would like to participate (even infants who crawl), there's literally a race opportunity for everyone!

Training

If you're in need of a training plan, runDisney has connected with Olympian Jeff Galloway and offers different training plans for different experience levels/distances. By utilizing the run/walk method, Jeff has helped many many runners cross the finish line and reach their ultimate goal!

Runners World is also another great place to look for tips, advice, and training plans. In fact, RW is where I started when I began running again.

Packing

Apart from the many many race packing tips out there, my main advice to anyone who is flying in for a race is to keep your running shoes on your person - either in your carry on or on your feet. Also, I prefer to pack my race specific outfit in my carry on, just to be safe (because you never know).

If you're planning on participating in a runDisney race challenge (2 races back to back), I'd also suggest bringing along two pair of running shoes. You never know what the weather will be like on race day and if it rains on your 10K day, there's nothing worse than running in soggy shoes on half marathon day.

I've also included two posts - one on packing for a race with air travel and one on packing for a race without air travel.

Expo

Apart from the race itself, the Expo is one of my favorite parts of a runDisney weekend. The excitement in the air for the upcoming race weekend is literally palpable and I love it! Oh yes, and who could forget shopping? There's definitely shopping - and lots of it!

When you first arrive at the expo, I suggest heading straight to the bib/shirt area to pick those up first.

Also, if there's a piece of runDisney merchandise you really just have to have, you should arrive early-like opening day of the expo-because merchandise can sell out fairly quickly (if you're into that sort of stuff). Our travel plans have always varied on when we arrive - sometimes things are sold out and sometimes they have plenty of merchandise. You really never know what you're going to arrive to. Apart from runDisney merchandise, many other running companies are out there selling theirs as well. Who knows, you might even find a new piece of gear you didn't know existed!

It's so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the expo because it really can be overwhelming. This happened to me at my first expo and honestly, I did not get to enjoy it much at all. So, go into it knowing there's going to be a lot going on, relax, take your time, and enjoy it!!

The Race

You've made it this far, now it's time for the race itself - the highlight of the runDisney experience!

If you're using runDisney transportation, you'll need to be on a bus early! If the race begins at 5:30 a.m., you'll likely need to be on a bus no later than 3 or 3:30 a.m. Insane, I know - but it's their only way to ensure that all 25,000 (ish) runners make it to the start line. During the Princess Half Marathon last year, I attempted to push the time closer to 4 a.m. and what a mistake - we were caught in terrible traffic and it literally took 45 minutes for us to pull up at the start line. I was definitely cutting it close to the start of the race.

Also, the buses don't drop you off at the start line. For the half and full marathons, you still have about a half mile mile walk ahead of you to the starting corrals, so don't get on a bus too late!

Unless you're planning to PR your runDisney race, don't take it too seriously. I have had some of the best "race moments" of my life, playing around in the Magic Kingdom, taking pictures, and just having fun with friends!

Speaking of pictures, be on the lookout for race photographers. They will be located along the race course, at character stops, and in the parks. If you're an AP holder or you purchased Memory Maker for your trip, these photos will be included on your My Disney Expeirence App at no extra charge!

As far as characters go, the lines might seem long, but they typically go pretty quickly because runners are basically jumping in, snagging a picture, then running off again. Character interaction is a super fun part of a runDisney race! Also, take the time to enjoy your surroundings. Not many people can say they ran a race through an actual Disney park!

Despite this, I do need to warn that you still need to be mindful of your time during the race. A 16 minute per mile cutoff is put in place as soon as the last runner crosses the start line (which calculates out to a brisk walk.)  Throughout the race, just be mindful of the time, your mileage, and be on the lookout for the balloon ladies! (If you're unfamiliar with the balloon ladies, you can find out all you need to know with a quick google search!)

Spectators

A few years back, I asked Jason for his best spectator advice and put it all together in a "spectator viewing tips" post. While that post is focused mostly on Marathon Weekend (January races) itself, a lot of the tips remain true for other runDisney race weekends as well.

So, as you can see, runDisney holds a very special place in my heart. Their races are seriously like no other and I'm super excited for those of you who are embarking on their very first runDisney experience! Please drop me an email or message to let me know how your race went and your thoughts regarding the event! I'd love to hear all about it!

Happy running! Have a magical race!

Vlog: 2018 Walt Disney World Kids Races & Hollywood Studios

We had SO much fun participating in the Kids Races this year during Walt Disney World's Marathon Weekend! Brayden had a blast running on the track (although I know he didn't fully understand what was going on)!

For a full recap of our WDW Marathon Weekend experience, check out these links below:

Today's video is a combination of the Kids Races (that took place after the 10K) and a bit about our time in Hollywood Studios!

I apologize in advance for my high pitch squealing during the race! :) Thanks for following along in our journey!

Walt Disney World Kids Races (100 m Dash)

During most runDisney events at both Walt Disney World and Disneyland (when they were available), a variety of shorter distance kids races are also offered...which is a fun way to get the kids involved in a runDisney event of their own!

runDisney's Kids Races

Having only previously participated in the Diaper Dash with Brayden, we wanted to see what the 100m Dash was all about now that he's fully mobile!

For a full recap of our WDW Marathon Weekend experience, check out these links below:

runDisney's Kids Races

I made sure to check the race guide before heading to ESPN because I remembered that the races were tiered by times. With the 100m Dash being the shortest kids race (apart from the Diaper Dash), the start time was right at 10:30 a.m., so we planned to be there around 10 a.m. We also scheduled this race for Friday morning (after the 10K) because I knew I would have more time after the race to shower and get ready.

runDisney's Kids Races

When we arrived, we first headed over to the track to figure out where the start line was located so we could get in line fairly early. This was a mistake we made for the Diaper Dash so we wanted to be prepared this time.

runDisney's Kids Races

After securing our spot in line, I sent Jason off to the bleacher area to take pictures.

runDisney's Kids Races

This may look like a lot of people in front of me but it actually isn't. You should have seen the line BEHIND me...oh my goodness. We made it into the third wave of runners so it wasn't bad at all!

runDisney's Kids Races

This family was absolutely adorable! If you're familiar with the Disney Jr show "PJ Masks", the kids were dressed like Cat Boy and Gecko and the mom and dad were dressed like Luna Girl and Romeo! So precious!

Mickey was waiting at the finish line to cheer the kids on!

runDisney's Kids Races

By the time we lined up, we weren't able to get up to the white starting line but that was ok with me - I planned to stick back so Jason could see us and take good pictures! I also wanted to make sure Brayden had plenty of room to run so he wouldn't get knocked over!

runDisney's Kids Races

After we moved to the side and I let go of his hand, he had a BALL! He was so exicted to run and his little giggle of delight was too precious!

runDisney's Kids Races

Photopass photographers were out there, too!

runDisney's Kids Races

It was cold so you can't see his outfit, but his shirt is the "Original Mousketeer" onesie - I figured it was appropriate for a Mickey medal! :)

runDisney's Kids Races

As we neared the finish line and Mickey, I told Brayden to give Mickey a high five, so he did!

runDisney's Kids Races

What a way to end a race! Jason even managed to catch the high five on camera!

runDisney's Kids Races

100m Dash - all done!

After crossing the finish line, there was water, bananas, and GoGo Squeeze Apple Sauce packets for the kids. They each also received a medal at the finish line and an adorable t-shirt/race bib with their registration packet.

This medal is precious and now hanging next to his Diaper Dash medal!

It has been fun to see and participate in several aspects of the runDisney Kids Races.

From crawlers (or non crawlers because he wasn't even really crawling for the Diaper Dash) to older kids, there's something for everyone!

Vlog: 2017 runDisney Diaper Dash

Our first experience with runDisney's Diaper Dash was a fun one and definitely a memorable time for my family! Kids of all ages participated in races that included distances anywhere from a short dash for the babies all the way to a 1 mile fun run for the older kids!

We registered my 10 month old for the Diaper Dash that was held during the Princess Half Marathon Weekend and I captured video footage of the even to share with you!

If you missed other recaps from our Princess Half Marathon trip, you can check them out here:

Check out the video below!

Thanks for watching! Have a great weekend!! :)

runDisney Kids Races & Diaper Dash

For this year's Princess Half Marathon weekend, my entire family participated in one race event or another. Brayden felt left out (well, maybe), so I decided to sign him up for his first official race, the Diaper Dash!

If you missed other updates from our Princess Half Marathon Weekend, you can check them out here:

Packet pickup the day before the race was super easy - you can read about it here. When I picked up his bib, I also received one of those clear plastic Disney bags as well as his t-shirt. For the Kids Races, runDisney offers shirts from a 2T on up which obviously doesn't fit my baby now, but will in the future. I'd definitely rather it be too big than too small.

Also, there were two mornings to choose from for the Kids Races. Since all of us were participating in the 10K on Saturday morning, I registered Brayden for Friday morning instead.

The night before the event, I read up on all the information inside the digital program guide. I was under the impression that the race started at 9 a.m., but it didn't. The Kids Races in general started at 9 a.m. with various wave times for each distance, ending with the Diaper Dash at 10:20 a.m. I'm so glad we didn't arrive at 8:30 a.m. only to sit around for a few hours! Crisis averted and lesson learned....always read the program guide!

We arrived at ESPN (same location as the Expo) around 9:30 a.m. and followed the crowd. There were several runDisney volunteers who were there to direct us to the New Balance Track and Field.

Right as we arrived, I heard Carissa (the runDisney race announcer) mention that the Diaper Dash would be held at the black start/finish line sign. Had I not heard her say that, I would have been very confused because there was no signage for the Diaper Dash.

We got Brayden situation, then he was ready to race crawl!

We stood around and watched the Kids Races for a little while, then it was our turn!

We lined up behind the gates and about 5-6 babies were allowed on the track at one time. I somehow ended up at the back of the line instead of midway through the pack like I wanted. Oh well. It took about 15 minutes to get to us, but we had fun watching the other babies attempting to crawl, crawl, and even walk!

We all lined up with our babies backwards so the photo pass people could determine which kid belonged to which parent/photo pass account.

Also, they rolled out a carpet type mat for the babies to crawl on so they didn't have to crawl on the actual track! So smart!!

So as you know, Brayden was 10 months old for the Diaper Dash and had only started crawling (officially on all fours) about 2 weeks before the event. I was worried that he wouldn't cooperate but with a little persuasion (aka puffs), he did crawl a little bit! I think he was mostly confused as to what was going on!

The race announcer knew how to keep things rolling and let us play around for a while, then started to wrap up our wave.

He crawled about half way before I picked him up and half walked him to the finish line. This is when he spotted Minnie Mouse and boy was he intrigued!

Like his outfit? I figured it was appropriate for Princess Half Marathon Weekend! :)

 YAY he did it!

After the finish line were cups of water, bananas, and apple sauce pouches.

Brayden's first race was complete! Even though he had no clue what was going on, we still had fun with him and definitely have stories to share for the future!

Diaper Dash: he did it!

Stay tuned for more fun recaps of our Princess Half Marathon weekend!! :)
